How Big is Your Digital Footprint?

<insert an example beach scene or footprint here>

We are learning that everything we look at, click on, upload, download, comment or share leaves a footprint.

We used History (Ctrl H) on our Chromebook to look at all the places we have been online in the 24 hours.

We placed icons of these websites on the beach and used footprints to mark our trail.

This represented our digital footprint for the last 24 hours.

  • Every-time we go online we leave a trail.
  • Footprints online are called a digital footprint.
  • We need to make smart decisions about what we share online.
  • Our digital footprint will be online forever.
  • If we are not sure we don’t share and check with a trusted adult.

Ssh! That's Too Private!

We are learning to understand why some information is private and why we as humans like sharing personal information about ourselves.

It is awesome to want to share things with others - actually it’s part of what makes us human (see the slide above).

What information shouldn't be shared online?
  • Your full name

  • Your address

  • Your phone number

We practiced turning private information into personal information:

Cybersmart - Smart Footprint - Private vs Personal - Part 1

What information can we share online? Why is it important that we don’t share too much information? Who can look at the information we share online?

We are learning to choose which information should be kept private and which information is okay to share.

Last week we looked at how you can find out information about someone. Cooper shared a whole lot of information in his story - he shared too much! We call the information that keeps us safe private information which means we don’t share it with others.

Today we decided what information Cooper shared that made him unsafe. We split the information into private and personal information.

Here is our list of things that are private and should not be shared online:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your full name
  • Your address

This information can be used to identify you individually.

As a class, we choose two celebrities and saw if we could find out any private information about them.
